Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) is a well established 3D printing / additive manufacturing process used to provide designers and engineers with a physical representation of the CAD design in as little as 1 to 3 days depending on part geometries and complexity. Using a sintered plastic powder, parts can be built to provide customers with a tough, durable component that can be used for form, fit and function testing in rigorous environments. SLS parts can also be joined, bonded and finished to form much large structures or assemblies. Examples of these include automotive instrument panels and rear spoilers.

In many instances today clients have been using SLS as a low volume manufacturing solution, as parts can be produced in a fraction of the time when compared to hard tooling and injection moulding. Parts can also be modified easily allowing for niche volume batch runs to accommodate clients target market needs. SLS is a very popular process and used across most industry sectors. In particular Automotive, Defense, Medical, Marine, Consumer Products, Architectural, Electronics and transportation industries.

Ability to build large or small parts

SLS allows customers to have big parts, small parts and volume parts in relavtively short timescales. Even if the component designed is larger than the build chamber of the SLS machine, parts can be built in sections then joined, bonded and where necessary re-enforced with glass fibre matting to form a complete structure. The model can then be finished and painted to match specified colours or corporate pantone requirements. The speed in which these parts can be manufactured provide customers with significant time and cost saving, whilst also allowing them to provide various iterations of the same model. The opportunities that this process offers customers to respond quickly to market needs are significant and a key competitive advantage when bringing products to market.
